When to use this
Use this when you need a black and white version and you do not want a full editor. A portrait for print, a product shot for a monochrome layout, or a scan of a receipt can all start here. The pixels stay the same size. Only the colour goes away.
Photo uses a standard luminance mix, so skin, sky, and fabric keep the brightness they already had. Document stretches that grey so ink looks darker and paper looks lighter. It is the better choice for forms, notes, and screenshots of text. It is a harsher look on a face.
JPG cannot store a clear background. If the source has empty pixels, a JPG fills them with white before the grey is calculated. Keep PNG when you still need those pixels clear. WebP can keep them too.
After the conversion, compress if the file is still heavy, or crop if you only want part of the picture.

Tips
- Photo is the safer look for people and products. Document is for text and scans.
- A picture that is already grey stays grey. The tool does not invent colour.
- JPG fills clear pixels with white. Use PNG if you still need transparency.
- Quality around 0.92 is a good balance for JPG and WebP.
